Dorothy Heathcote
TIPUNA
Many of the roots of Dramatic Inquiry can be traced back to the work of internationally acclaimed educator Dorothy Heathcote (1926–2011). Heathcote visited Aotearoa New Zealand in the 1970s and 1980s and teachers who attended her workshops still remember the impact of those experiences. Others recall her keynote address at the 2009 Weaving our Stories conference in Kirikiriroa, Hamilton. As Dramatic Inquiry evolves in new directions in response to the unique bicultural context of Aotearoa New Zealand, we acknowledge the foundations within Heathcotes work and continue to learn from, and be inspired by, her legacy.

Tim Taylor
TUPUNA AND MENTOR - ENGLAND
Tim Taylor has played a significant role in developing and sharing Dramatic Inquiry, both in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. A long-time collaborator and mentee of Dorothy Heathcote, Tim brought her ideas into new settings and helped shape the evolving language and structure of the approach we now call Dramatic Inquiry. His workshops, resources, and mentoring have supported countless educators to build confidence, reflect deeply, and design meaningful inquiry-based experiences. Many in our network have been directly influenced by Tim’s generosity, clarity, and long-standing commitment to this work. We honour his contribution as both a tūpuna and a mentor within this community.

Dr Viv Aitken
TUPUNA AND MENTOR - AOTEAROA, NZ
Dr Viv Aitken has been a driving force in the development and understanding of Dramatic Inquiry in Aotearoa New Zealand. Her work as a researcher, practitioner, and teacher educator has shaped how Dramatic Inquiry is applied in classrooms across the motu. Viv has supported schools, mentored teachers, published widely, and helped build the shared language and frameworks that underpin this approach today. Her leadership has been grounded in collaboration, care, and deep respect for the bicultural context of Aotearoa. Many of us trace our journey with Dramatic Inquiry back to a conversation, workshop, or provocation offered by Viv. We honour her as both tūpuna and mentor — a foundational presence in this community.
