Guiding the Way: Reflections from a Mantle Journey – Exploring Our Community
Ko au te whenua, ko te whenua ko au
I am the land, and the land is me
Three weeks passed before I was back in the New Entrant classroom. It felt like a long break, and if I'm honest, I was a little nervous. So much of the success of the previous lessons had come from the children's investment in Sheepy. I wondered whether that connection would still be there after such a long time away.
Thankfully, I needn't have worried for as soon as I walked through the door, the children wanted to know where Sheepy was and what adventure he might have next. Their excitement was a reminder that Mantle doesn't simply live in the lesson itself. If the story has captured the children, it stays with them.
This lesson was always going to be quieter than the last. There was no great mystery to solve or dramatic search around the school. Instead, it was one of those important sessions that quietly built the world of the Mantle. I knew that the children's ideas today would become the foundation for our next lesson, so I wanted to spend time listening rather than leading.
To begin, we read Pete the Sheep. I introduced Pete as Sheepy's dad, which immediately sparked plenty of discussion. The children had often wondered where Sheepy's family was, so this felt like a natural way to deepen the story while also introducing another important idea.
Just like us, Sheepy belonged somewhere. That he had a family, a home, and places that mattered to him.
That connected beautifully with one of our school values, Kia Maia – Stand Proud. We talked about being proud of who we are and where we come from, and how the places in our community help us feel like we belong.
After the story, I asked a simple question:
"If Sheepy is going to live here, where should we take him?"
Their responses came quickly, often followed with stories about when they have been to that place, or why they have been. Our brainstorm included:
The library
The vet
The doctors practice and the hospital
The arcade
Mitre 10
The Warehouse
The supermarket
Home
Two different playgrounds
The hairdresser
The airport
The beach
The carwash
The petrol station
What struck me wasn't just the variety of places, it was what those places represented. The children weren't naming landmarks because they were important on a map. They were naming the places that were important in their lives. Places where they spent time with family, celebrated birthdays, bought groceries, visited grandparents or went when they were sick. Without realising it, they were teaching Sheepy about their community.
As we added to our brainstorm, one little girl suddenly paused.
"Sheepy needs to be very careful when he goes exploring. He needs to know the road rules."
It wasn't where I thought the lesson was heading, but it was too important to ignore. We put our brainstorm aside and spent time role-playing how to cross the road safely. The children eagerly demonstrated stopping at the kerb, looking both ways, holding an adult's hand and staying together. They weren't just learning about road safety. They were teaching Sheepy how to stay safe in his new community.
Looking back, I'm pleased we followed that unexpected detour. One of the joys of teaching through Mantle is that the children often reveal what matters most. Had I been too focused on sticking rigidly to my planning, we might have missed a conversation that was both authentic and meaningful.
This lesson wasn't about producing a finished map. In fact, that was never the intention. What I needed most was to understand which places were important to the children, because those places would become the heart of our imagined world. Sometimes, the most valuable planning doesn't happen before the lesson, it happens with the children. Their ideas shaped where our story would go next in a way I could never have planned on my own.
As I left the classroom that day, I felt a real sense of excitement. The children had suggested a whole community for Sheepy to explore, full of ideas, places, and possibilities. I couldn’t help but wonder what adventure Sheepy would find himself on next…
